August 1, 2024 — 
After more than a year of hard work and planning, the editorial team at the Manitoba Law Journal announces the inaugural release of its newest dimension: The Review of Enterprise and Trade Law (TRETL). The release of the MLJ’s Volume 46, Issue 7 follows the merging of the freshly-minted Desautels Review and the long-standing Asper Review of International Business and Trade Law. TRETL will be the MLJ’s sixth dimension of publication, focussing on broad legal issues faced by business and trade globally as well as local issues respecting trade and enterprise in Manitoba.

The University of Manitoba Faculty of Law has been named one of three law school recipients of a grant under the the Intellectual Property Clinics Program, which promotes intellectual property education, awareness, and capacity building. The Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, announced the 2023–2024 recipients of support on May 1, 2024. The grant will support the L. Kerry Vickar Business Law Clinic and Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts and be used to enhance IP training for law students participating in these Clinics at the Faculty of Law.

The Faculty of Law has been busy hosting a variety of Justice-related events this summer while law students are away working and gaining hands-on legal practice experience. On May 6th-7th, 2024, the University of Manitoba and the Manitoba Law Foundation hosted the first annual Access to Justice Forum. This year the focus of the Forum was supporting A2J for Indigenous & racialized communities in Manitoba. The Forum included presentations from Marc Kruse (Director of Indigenous Legal Learning and Services, U of M, Faculty of Law), Laurelle Harris, K.C. (Equitable Solutions Consulting) and the British Columbia Indigenous Justice Centre.

July 19, 2024 — 
Starting in the fall of 2025, the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of law will offer two new micro-diplomas to allow internationally trained lawyers (ITLs) to become licensed to practice law in Manitoba. Consultations started in 2023 to identify what systemic barriers to legal education these individuals faced, and what remedial measures would improve access to legal education and, in turn, access to justice in Manitoba. The consultations resulted in the launch of the micro-diplomas – one in Canadian Public Law and one in Canadian Private Law.

As the legal profession moves further into the bold new—virtual—world of web-based services, the MLJ’s Executive Editors, Dr. Bryan P. Schwartz and Professor Darcy L. MacPherson, are excited to announce a new special issue about Online Dispute Resolution (ODR). The project is part 2 of a trilogy of issues centered on how the Canadian legal system deals with crisis in the modern age. Volume 46, Issue 2, Online Dispute Resolution: Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic, is part oral history, part academic exploration of ODR.

July 9, 2024 — 
The University of Manitoba has approved changes to the Faculty of Law’s Master of Laws (LLM) program in the spring of 2024. Graduate program applicants starting their studies in September of 2025 will have the opportunity to choose to complete either thesis or course-based LLMs. As well, applicants are no longer required to have a Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, but rather can apply with a non-law degree relevant to their proposed research area.

July 8, 2024 — 
On May 30, 2024, law students from the Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts attended Arts & Culture Day at the Legislature, hosted by Manitobans for the Arts. This marked the first time in eight years that the event was held, bringing together lawmakers, artists, arts and culture organizations, and arts supporters. The law students had the unique opportunity to connect with many of the amazing individuals who contribute to Manitoba’s vibrant arts scene.
