The 2022 International Open Access Week theme acknowledges that the climate crisis touches all parts of society and its impacts are not borne equally or fairly. These power imbalances also extend to disparities in knowledge, contributing to ill-preparedness, inability to respond, and lack of resilience. Open scholarship, in any of its facets, can create opportunities for equity: contribution, sharing and collaboration.
Each of our speakers brings unique insights and reflections to this topic. Dr. Thompson will share how her collaborations with First Nations communities experiencing flooding and displacement risk due to climate change benefit by incorporating and producing open scholarship.
As the Deputy Director for Man-made Disasters, part of the National Disaster Management Organization of Ghana, Ms. Abubakar will explain how her work benefits from the ability to access and use open resources.
Dr. Mulvale will discuss how he has used open scholarship practices, including open education to engage student collaborations, in his work in the intersections of impacts of climate change, economic disparity and universal basic income.
Finally, Dr. Curnow will describe how public uptake of open climate science and advocacy can be fully realized as she describes her research exploring how climate justice activists learn and practice climate justice.
UM’s very own Dr. Mario Pinto, Vice-President (Research & International)
and Ms. Lisa O’Hara, Vice Provost (Libraries) & University Librarian
will share opening remarks.
Learn, network, and engage with these open scholarship champions in this unique event!
