‘Decolonizing the Classroom’: Learn strategies at this Jan. 21 session

January 18, 2022 —

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Community of Practice meetings continue on Friday, Jan. 21, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Featuring Dr. Cary Miller, Associate Vice-President (Indigenous) Scholarship, Research and Curriculum, this “Decolonizing the Classroom” session will introduce participants to strategies to decolonize the classroom and will discuss how to recognize and respond to fragility in the classroom, as well as explore ways to mitigate structural as well as overt racism in class environments.

Join the session as we continue to explore ways to decolonize our institution.

Indigenous achievement and engagement continues to be an institutional strategic priority: Underway is a university-wide effort to create a safe work and learning environment for Indigenous students, staff, faculty, and guests; to advance reconciliation; to fight anti-Indigenous racism; and to foster relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities.

EDI Community of Practice

The Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Community of Practice’s vision is to bring together UM employees and students to foster an inclusive campus. With over 200 members to date, the group seeks to advance EDI in our community through EDI best practices, engaging guest speakers for specific topics of interest and facilitating group discussion around the difficult issues.

In our first meeting, we asked the group to identify the priorities they would like to see addressed; decolonization is at the top of the list.

All interested students, faculty and staff are welcome to join the EDI Community of Practice to help create a more dynamic and inclusive campus.
