CTV News: Walking With Our Sisters Quilt unveiled

July 4, 2014 —

The U of M’s Deborah Young was quoted in a story about the unveiling of a quilt to honour Manitoba’s missing and murdered Aboriginal women.

“It’s just a powerful symbol of strength and I believe it truly honours many women and girls who have lost their lives to violence,” said Deborah Young, University of Manitoba indigenous achievement lead.

The beading circles of Indigenous Achievement at the University of Manitoba and Neechi Niche formally unveiled the Commemorative Bead-In Quilt on July 3. It was inspired by the travelling exhibit Walking With Our Sisters, and was made of 1700 moccasin tops.

It will reside at Neechi Commons for members of the community to witness and remember.
