Winter Festival Ends
Join us for the university’s 140th birthday celebration on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The celebration will feature live music, food, fun winter activities and more!
The day will begin with a Sunrise Ceremony at the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation, followed by a pancake breakfast at the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses.
Everyone is invited to the festival kick-off at 12:30 p.m. on the steps of the Administration Building, including singing by University Singers, cake and hot chocolate.
Snowshoe races, s’mores stations and human foosball are just a few of the fun winter activities that will take place at the winter festival at Innovation Plaza in the afternoon. If you are looking for an afternoon snack, there will be food trucks selling BeaverTails ($4) and poutine ($5).
You will also have the opportunity to reflect on the 140th anniversary theme of identity – and what the U of M means to you – at our video booth in the GSA Lounge.
The day will end with a coffee and conversation event for University of Manitoba retirees.
Come out and help us celebrate 140 years!
The University of Manitoba is celebrating our 140th anniversary this year, in conjunction with Canada’s 150. Follow the conversation and hear more about our history, people and celebration events at #UM140
Don’t forget the University of Manitoba Archives is hosting an exhibit celebrating the 140th, “The Legacy of Alexander Kennedy Isbister,” Monday to Friday 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, 330 Elizabeth Dafoe Library. Isbister, of Metis heritage, started the University in the direction of acceptance of all students through his gift of scholarship funds & his library. His openness to education for all students was an idea that was well before his time.
I love Canada, especially Manitoba, the place where there is humanity without discrimination, in terms of race, religion.
Happy 140th University of Manitoba. I remember my years as a masters student there fondly.

Thank you for organizing this special event !!
I just can’t wait for tomorrow event Happy to see these kind of events.Thumbs Up to organizers.
I came to Canada (from The Netherlands) in 1967. Of the many universities available, chose Winnipeg’s University of Manitoba. Never regretted that step. Had a wonderful teaching, research, mentoring, publishing and conference career. Thank you, Canada, for your hospitality, social values and (most of the time) wonderful weather – even when sometimes a bit too hot or too cold.
I was never a good student. I struggled with my courses just to graduate with a BA, however, I enjoyed every day because of the people. There is an air of optimism and diversification that you do not find anywhere else. I participated in the life of the university: student government, sports and lived in a fraternity house. Congratulations on reaching your 140th year.
Happy Birthday UofMB!
Thank you to all the people who were behind the scenes for this special day.
Great way to start the week It was a great day and the food and snacks were amazing!
