Winnipeg Free Press: U of M establishes joint business, law degree program

Its a first-of-its-kind partnership — the merging of an undergraduate and graduate program — in the province.

“The university’s been involved in driving the legal profession in this province for almost 110 years now and in many cases, those lawyers are the people drafting the deals and driving big corporate and commercial deals in the province for business people,” said Richard Jochelson, dean of Robson Hall.

Jochelson said legal professionals who graduate from U of M’s newest concurrent program will bring an extra set of competencies to those discussions, in turn benefiting all Manitobans.

Where Law and Theatre Connect

On November 5, 2024, 3 law students from the Faculty of Law’s Manitoba Legal Clinic for the Arts became educators and gave an in-person seminar to the University of Winnipeg’s “The Business of Theatre” Class.

Manitoba’s Access to Justice Week 2024 webinars reach record-breaking audience

Record-breaking numbers of people registered for Manitoba’s four Access to Justice Week webinars presented October 28 to 31, 2024. A total of 990 registrations were received from 555 unique individuals. For the fourth year in a row, The Faculty of Law, Law Society of Manitoba, and the Manitoba Bar Association organized panels designed to bring together stakeholders in the legal community to develop meaningful, public-centred solutions that advance systemic change in the justice system.

Policing the Police

Ancillary Police Powers in Canada: A Critical Assessment, co-authored by John Burchill, practicing professional instructor, and Dr. Richard Jochelson, Dean of Law, was released by UBC Press on October 15, 2024. Written in collaboration with legal scholars Dr. Akwasi Owusu-Bempah and Dr. Terry Skolnik, the book critically examines the legal and social dimensions of ancillary police powers in Canada.
