Indigenous students invited to apply for summer internships
Fifteen opportunities across U of M; apply by March 8
Note: Application deadline extended to March 8 for select internships.
Kelsey Papineau enjoyed the group development days offered by the Indigenous summer student internship program, which included workshops that “allowed us to learn more about Indigenous culture and talks from elders,” she says. Last summer, she worked as a student intern on a research project that focused on the mental health challenges of Winnipeg’s homeless population.
“This program is a great opportunity for Indigenous students attending the U of M,” says Mackenzie Chartrand, who worked as an intern for the College of Rehabilitation Sciences and with First Nations communities as part of the Kiga mamo anokimin onji minoayawin project.
To apply by March 8, visit UM Careers and search “Indigenous Intern.” Each position will include the host department and job details.
This is the second year that the program is available to the university’s Indigenous students. Last year, 14 students took part in the summer work placements.
Indigenous U of M students are invited to apply for the 2019 Indigenous Summer Student Internship Program, starting February 15. Applicants must be full-time Indigenous U of M students, who are either graduating this spring or returning to full-time studies in the fall.
The internship program is an exciting opportunity for Indigenous students to access unique career-related experiences in their field of study.
“The U of M has a wide range of meaningful work opportunities that we want to publicize to our students so they consider building a career at the university after graduation,” says Darlene Smith, acting associate vice-president, human resources.
This year placements will include the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Science, Asper School of Business, and the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, to name a few areas.
In addition to the work placements, every second Friday the students will participate in group development days organized by human resources.
This year, there will be 15 summer placements and the deadline for students to apply is March 8. The students will be hired to work from May 6 to August 23.
All Indigenous students are encouraged to apply.
