UM Faces and Spaces: Örjan Sandred, music and AI

January 12, 2024 —

Conversations around Artificial Intelligence (AI) are happening across industries and post-secondary institutions around the world and here at UM. From research to how it influences how students learn, but what about using it for increasing creativity?

Professor of Composition at Desautels Faculty of Music, Örjan Sandred, is revolutionizing the creative process with the aid of AI. Sandred’s work combines human ingenuity with Artificial Intelligence, utilizing advanced algorithms to compose new musical pieces.

In December 2023, he got a chance to explore how to bring AI and performers on one stage to unlock new dimension of musical expression. He was in Sweden working with a string quartet at the Stockholm Electroacoustic Music studio, using AI.

Beyond the studio, Sandred says music has always reflected the times, and in this era, harnessing the power of AI in music composition and creation is a logical and exciting progression.
