Two of the Faculty of Science’s professors receive recognition for their teaching excellence
“Over the years, my laboratory has been open to many undergraduate students who have their first research experience working on some of our research projects. Being recognized by one of these students as somebody who made a positive impact in their career and life is the best award I could hope for”, says Silvia Cardona, professor and associate head graduate at the department of microbiology. Cardona is one of the two professors from the Faculty of Science who have received the Students’ Teacher Recognition Reception (STRR), the award that celebrates teaching excellence. STRR holds a special meaning since the nomination is made by an outstanding graduate student. They chose two educators who have significantly influenced their learning journey—one from Kindergarten to Grade 12 years and another from their time at the University of Manitoba.
“This is my favourite award to receive because it comes directly from students. It is immensely rewarding to have made a difference in someone’s career. I am so proud of both Katherine Bazin and Huy Tran Le Luu, who selected me for this award in 2022 and 2024 and [I] can’t wait to see what they will achieve in the future. We have many talented students in our programs, and it is one of the best parts of my job to help them succeed and reach their professional goals”, says Sabine Kuss, associate professor and associate head at the department of chemistry who is also a recipient of STRR from the Faculty of Science.
