University of Manitoba-led study improves understanding of fatal brain cancer

On Feb. 1, Dr. Kellie Thiessen assumed the role of dean of the College of Nursing in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences.  

February 12, 2025 — 
The College of Nursing held its largest-ever pinning ceremony on Feb. 5, welcoming 146 new nurses to the profession. 

February 11, 2025 — 
A new study from researchers at the University of Manitoba’s Rady Faculty of Health Sciences has identified a possible treatment option and greater understanding of recurrent glioblastoma, a fatal form of brain cancer and the one that took beloved Canadian musician Gord Downie’s life in 2017.

An Elder wellness project at Lake Manitoba First Nation done in partnership with the College of Rehabilitation Sciences will mark five years this spring, with continued work on an intergenerational walking path.

Dr. Peter Nickerson, vice-provost (health sciences) and dean, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, and Dr. Marcia Anderson, vice-dean Indigenous health, social justice and anti-racism, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, are pleased to announce that Kagowa Kuruneri has been appointed director of the Rady Faculty office of equity, access and participation, effective Jan. 3, 2025.

When Dr. Juliana (Julie) Pfeffer was growing up, she thought all dentists conducted research, taught dental students and delivered care, because her parents did all three.

For 45 years, the University of Manitoba has partnered with the University of Nairobi and the non-profit Partners for Health and Development in Africa (PHDA) to achieve successful STI and HIV research, prevention, care and treatment programs to the most vulnerable communities in Kenya and in Africa.

For most of her early career after graduating from UM as a nurse, Dr. Lisa Knisley [BN/94] cared for adult patients. But in 2000, she was working in a cardiac catheter lab in London, England, that served both adults and children.

January 27, 2025 — 
Soon after Joanne Parsons [BMRPT/03, M.Sc./09, PhD/14] made the move from clinical physiotherapy to academia, she initiated a research project at a Winnipeg high school.
