UM apologizes to First Nations, Métis and Inuit descendant communities
June 9, 2024 —
On Monday afternoon, UM President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Michael Benarroch stood before a crowd of Indigenous students, staff, faculty, community members and allies to publicly apologize for the university’s history related to the inappropriate acquisition and housing of Indigenous ancestral remains, burial belongings and cultural heritage.

A supportive community for returning Indigenous students

Offered by the Indigenous Student Centre, The Blankstein Momentum Program connects Indigenous students like Scott Rear with UM resources that will support them through their academic journeys. Whether a returning student needs help getting back on track, elevating their GPA or connecting with the Indigenous community, Momentum provides Indigenous students with the tools they need to succeed.
Representation matters

Sunday Queskekapow (they/them) is a Two-Spirit Swampy Cree person from northern Manitoba who believes that representation matters. Originally from Opaskwayak Cree Nation, also known as OCN/The Pas, Sunday spent a lot of their teenage years feeling confused and secluded. Queskekapow says they just didn’t see a lot of people who were like them.

Inuit Legal Clinic Summit at Robson Hall

The Faculty of Law and Perrie Law, with funding from the Manitoba Law Foundation, hosted a gathering of stakeholders on May 1 - 2 attending an Inuit Legal Clinic Summit. The purpose of the summit was to listen to community experiences with cross-jurisdictional legal issues and to determine the viability of an Inuit Legal Clinic in Winnipeg.

UM sessional instructor receives 2024 Migizii Award

Amy Carpenter, a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Education, is the 2024 recipient of the Migizii Award. Carpenter received the award at the University of Manitoba’s 35th Annual Traditional Graduation Pow Wow on May 4.
