As part of National Nursing Week, a group of students and faculty at the College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences officially launched a new initiative promoting mental health awareness with an engaging virtual event on May 10.

In honour of National Nursing Week, Mahkwa omushki kiim: Pathway to Indigenous Nursing Education (PINE), which offers support to Indigenous students at the College of Nursing in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, reached out to several Indigenous nursing alumni to learn about their careers and reflections on their time at UM. Below are a selection of the responses.

May 6, 2022 — 
Three University of Manitoba graduate students, including two from the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, were among 255 across Canada to receive doctoral research awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in April. Each student received $105,000 over three years for their projects.

May 4, 2022 — 
From a young age, Dr. Claire Betker [BN/77] felt called to the nursing profession. She was captivated by stories of her maternal grandmother, a registered nurse whom neither she nor her mother ever had a chance to know.

April 27, 2022 — 
Over 30 graduate students from the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences have been awarded graduate studentships, a new scholarship offered to RFHS graduate students enrolled in their first or second year of a thesis-based master’s or doctoral program.

April 12, 2022 — 
Undergraduate students from health professional programs at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences now have an opportunity to apply for a fully funded two-to-three month experiential learning placement in one of seven African countries.

Dr. Roberta Woodgate believes young people’s voices have been overlooked in the past and is looking to amplify their voice when it comes to their care.

April 11, 2022 — 
The College of Nursing, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences  is offering a new course for the summer term that will explore health care and research from Indigenous worldviews and experiences. The course is open to all UM graduate students.

April 5, 2022 — 
Two Rady Faculty of Health Sciences faculty members and researchers at the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba (CHRIM) were recently awarded New Investigator Research Grants from the Sick Kids Foundation, a national health education group, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Institute of Human Development, Child and Youth Health.

March 24, 2022 — 
A dentist and academic who led the UM dentistry program for eight years said he was humbled to be formally appointed dean emeritus of dentistry at a virtual ceremony on March 7.
