Queer Research Cafés: Call for Researchers

December 11, 2013 —

Dr. Robert Mizzi (Assistant Professor, University of Manitoba, Faculty of Education) and Dr. Reece Malone (Education Program Coordinator, Rainbow Resource Centre) are interested in featuring a series of faculty and/or student researchers who have recently (<3 years) completed or are finishing up a research project that is focused on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, two-spirit and/or queer (LGBTTQ) issues in the local or global community. Known as “Queer Research Cafés”, researchers will facilitate an informal dialogue with community members about the research processes, challenges, findings, and conclusions that resulted from the research project. The goal of Queer Research Cafés is to provide an educational space for researchers to communicate their study findings relevant to the LGBTTQ community and for community members to learn of such research and engage researchers as a means to improve personal and professional lives and build networks. The discussion will normally last approximately 1.5 hours and will be held on a weekday evening. The location for the Queer Research Cafés will be at the Rainbow Resource Centre (Winnipeg) and will profile 6 researchers per year. If there is interest, we can also create Queer Research Cafés for Brandon-based researchers.

The benefits to researchers for participating in a Queer Research Café are:

  1. to communicate their research to the community as a knowledge mobilization/transfer activity and
  2. to expand their research network that may include future study participants, community partners, and other stakeholders.

This is a call for researchers from the wider academic community to participate in a Queer Research Café. We welcome researchers from all academic disciplines. Researchers can ask questions or send the following information as an expression of interest to Dr. Robert Mizzi (robert [dot] mizzi [at] umanitoba [dot] ca):

  1. Name(s) of Researcher(s)
  2. Academic Rank or Student Status (e.g., Masters, Doctoral)
  3. Institutional Affiliation
  4. Contact Information (Phone numbers, email address)
  5. Title of Presentation
  6. 300 Word Description of Research Project and Findings

The deadline to apply to participate in a Queer Research Café is January 31, 2014. Once accepted to participate in a Queer Research Café, researchers will work with the coordinating team to finalize the date and to clarify any logistical issues. The Rainbow Resource Centre will provide the meeting space and marketing support for the event.

We look forward to receiving your expressions of interest!
