October 21, 2015 —

The following is a memo to the university community sent by University of Manitoba President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. David T. Barnard about the search for a Provost and Vice-President (Academic):

The Presidential Advisory Committee to Appoint a Provost and Vice-President (Academic) has started its work to search for a successor to Dr. Joanne Keselman in this role as her term comes to its conclusion.

In addition to the Committee’s development of an advertisement to announce the start of the search, the Committee also will be developing a briefing document for potential candidates that will describe the accountabilities and expectations of the position, and the experience, background and qualifications being sought.

The advisory committee would appreciate your input into this process, specifically your views about the ideal profile for our next Provost and Vice-President (Academic) and your thoughts on any or all of the following topics:

  1. In light of the recent adoption of Taking Our Place, the University’s strategic plan for 2015 – 2020, and our desire to move forward with its implementation, what are your thoughts on the most important qualifications to be sought in candidates for the position of Provost and Vice-President (Academic) in terms of leadership style, academic credentials, background, and experience?
  1. What do you see as the opportunities, issues and challenges facing the University of Manitoba over this period, specifically those related to the portfolio held by the Provost and Vice-President (Academic)?
  1. Are there any particular individuals you would like to recommend?

I invite you to respond, in confidence, to the executive search firm of Odgers Berndtson via its representatives Gerri Woodford or Jason Murray at feedbackprovost [at] odgersberndtson [dot] ca. The Committee would appreciate receiving your comments by November 3, 2015. This input will be extremely helpful in informing the search for potential candidates, so we thank you in advance for your time and interest.
