This annual lecture, established by the Medicine Class of 1972, recognizes and honours Dr. Arnold Naimark’s legacy within the University of Manitoba and the College of Medicine. Dr. Naimark’s remarkable and enduring contributions include serving as Dean of Medicine from 1971-81 and University of Manitoba President and Vice- Chancellor from 1981-96.

Dr. Naimark, President Emeritus and Dean Emeritus, has led transformative change at the University of Manitoba. His career has been heavily focused on the advancement of scientific research and development, health innovation, institutional transformation and advanced education.

This year’s theme pays homage to classmate Donald Low [MD/72], who died from a brain tumor in September 2013. Dr. Low might be remembered most as the microbiologist credited with guiding Toronto through the 2003 SARS crisis in his role as microbiologist in chief at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital. Near the end of his life, Dr. Low was also an advocate for legalized physician-assisted suicide.
