Homecoming 2023: Celebrating 80 years of social work education

September 12, 2023 — 
Eighty years ago this October, the Faculty of Social Work opened its doors to meet the shortage of trained staff in Manitoba social welfare agencies. This year, we celebrate the alumni who have graduated from our Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work and Ph.D. programs over the past 80 years. The Faculty of Social Work 80th Anniversary Homecoming reception will be hosted by The Honourable Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba on September 14th. This year’s Homecoming celebration welcomes alumni from the past 60 years. During the reception, we will be presenting the Helen Mann 50th Anniversary Award to members of the community who have made outstanding contributions to the field of social work. UM receives funding for child maltreatment and child welfare research

July 20, 2023 — 
On July 20th, the Government of Canada announced nearly $900,000 in funding to the University of Manitoba for a project aimed at increasing research capacity in child maltreatment, child welfare and family violence.

Pushing back against ableism, focusing on capability with Dr. Peter Simcock

July 10, 2023 — 
Highlighting the abilities and contributions of disabled people and older adults ageing with disability can strengthen communities and aid in addressing misconceptions regarding disability. UM Distinguished Visiting Lecturer Peter Simcock, Ph.D., School of Education and Social Work, from Birmingham City University, United Kingdom, will be hosting events related to his research and experience in the physical and sensory disability field. His areas of specialization include social work and sensory impairment, deafness, deafblindness and dual sensory loss as well as working with disabled adults and older people.

Nominate an outstanding social worker, social activist or social work organization

The Faculty of Social Work is now accepting nominations for the Helen Mann 50th Anniversary Award. The award recognizes a person or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to the social work profession and/or to the field of social work in Manitoba. Every year, the award is presented to the recipient(s) during the Faculty of Social Work’s Homecoming celebration in September. Nominations are considered by the Faculty of Social Work Homecoming Committee.

In Memoriam: Dr. Pete Hudson

May 15, 2023 — 
The Faculty of Social Work is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Pete Hudson, former dean, director and professor. In 1983, Hudson was the director in the School of Social Work and became the first dean when the School became a Faculty in 1989. While at the Faculty, Hudson was a strong community and social policy advocate, specializing in child welfare and working with Indigenous youth.
