A Violent History of Benevolence: Dr. Chris Chapman on Social Work History

As part of the Baird Poskanzer Memorial Lecture Series, the Faculty of Social Work welcomes Dr. Chris Chapman, associate professor, York University to speak on the history of the social work profession and their book "A Violent History of Benevolence: Interlocking Oppression in the Moral Economies of Social Working". Dr. Chapman will explore how normative social work history is structured in such a way that contemporary social workers can know many details about social work’s violences, without ever imagining that they may also be complicit in these violences. They will discuss concepts from their book and how the framings of social work history actively create present-day political and ethical irresponsibility, even among those who imagine themselves to be anti-oppressive, liberal, or radical.

Lifting While I Lead: Social Work Leadership in Action with Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard

The Honourable Wanda Thomas Bernard, Senator for Nova Scotia presents: “Lifting While I Lead: Social Work Leadership in Action,” as part of SENgage, Senate of Canada’s youth outreach program. Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard is the first African Nova Scotian woman to be appointed to the Senate of Canada, representing the province of Nova Scotia and her hometown of East Preston. Senator Bernard champions issues impacting African Canadians and people living with disabilities. She is particularly invested in human rights, employment equity, and mental health.

Visiting Dean on What We Can Learn from Children and Why We Should Listen

The Faculty of Social Work welcomes Dr. Asher Ben-Arieh from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem to the University of Manitoba. Specializing in children's rights and child welfare, Dr. Ben-Arieh is a professor and Haruv Chair for the study of Child Maltreatment at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also the Dean of the Paul Baerwald School of Social Work and Social Welfare and Director of the Haruv Institute in Jerusalem.

Homecoming 2023: Celebrating 80 years of social work education

Eighty years ago this October, the Faculty of Social Work opened its doors to meet the shortage of trained staff in Manitoba social welfare agencies. This year, we celebrate the alumni who have graduated from our Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Social Work and Ph.D. programs over the past 80 years. The Faculty of Social Work 80th Anniversary Homecoming reception will be hosted by The Honourable Anita R. Neville, Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba on September 14th. This year’s Homecoming celebration welcomes alumni from the past 60 years. During the reception, we will be presenting the Helen Mann 50th Anniversary Award to members of the community who have made outstanding contributions to the field of social work. The Helen Mann 50th Anniversary Award recipients to be honoured during our Homecoming 2023 reception: Jill Taylor-Brown (2023) Lynne Fineman (2022) Lindsay Bacala (2021) Lorna Hanson (2020) Jainna Cabral (2019)

UM receives funding for child maltreatment and child welfare research

On July 20th, the Government of Canada announced nearly $900,000 in funding to the University of Manitoba for a project aimed at increasing research capacity in child maltreatment, child welfare and family violence.

Pushing back against ableism, focusing on capability with Dr. Peter Simcock

Highlighting the abilities and contributions of disabled people and older adults ageing with disability can strengthen communities and aid in addressing misconceptions regarding disability. UM Distinguished Visiting Lecturer Peter Simcock, Ph.D., School of Education and Social Work, from Birmingham City University, United Kingdom, will be hosting events related to his research and experience in the physical and sensory disability field. His areas of specialization include social work and sensory impairment, deafness, deafblindness and dual sensory loss as well as working with disabled adults and older people.

In Memoriam: Dr. Pete Hudson

The Faculty of Social Work is deeply saddened by the recent passing of Pete Hudson, former dean, director and professor. In 1983, Hudson was the director in the School of Social Work and became the first dean when the School became a Faculty in 1989. While at the Faculty, Hudson was a strong community and social policy advocate, specializing in child welfare and working with Indigenous youth.
