Musical theatre student shares passion with kids

September 29, 2015 —

When Preparatory Studies’ Musical Theatre classes start on October 7, Music and Education student Sarah Sommer will be the one in charge of the young performers; and she brings just the right mix of technical know-how and soaring passion for performing.

“Musical theatre was the place that I first got to explore my own passion for music and performing,” she says. “In this class, I hope to share that passion for musical theatre with my students, and spark their own passion and creativity.”

Skills learned in the class will include acting/improv, characterization, movement and vocal technique.

“They will work on a variety of repertoire as well as other fun exercises and games to develop these skills,” says Sommer, whose music focus is voice and education focus is senior years choral.

And, she adds, the students – who are between the ages of 7 and 14 – will also develop some important soft skills.

“Musical theatre class is a place where students get to celebrate being their unique selves. They get to explore their own personal creativity, pushing themselves slightly out of their own comfort zones in order to grow as young performers. This class will foster positive social interaction, team building and strengthen self-esteem,” she says.

The Desautels Faculty of Music program, which is open to performers of all levels, starts on Wednesday, October 7 and lasts for 25 weeks. Registration is still open.
