UM condemns the tragic death of Mahsa Amini

September 28, 2022 —

The University of Manitoba condemns the tragic and unjust death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody and is committed to supporting impacted community members during this challenging time.

Since this complex situation began to unfold in Iran, we have heard from many of you about how this is impacting you personally and for students, academically. We have responded directly to student comments and concerns including sharing available resources and supports.

The Provost鈥檚 Office has also asked all Deans to ensure Instructors and Sessionals who are supervising or teaching a student impacted by the current situation in Iran exercise compassion during this challenging time.

The Spiritual Care and Multifaith Team is planning a supportive gathering for students, to offer a safe space for sharing and support. It is scheduled to take place on Thursday from 4:30-6 p.m. and registrations are via email to spiritual care at spiritualcare [at] umanitoba [dot] ca. Find more details here.

Thank you to those students, student leaders, the Iranian Student Association, staff and faculty who have shared your feedback and concerns. In alignment with UMGSA鈥檚 recent motion, we affirm UM鈥檚 support for the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Our university community is strengthened by your compassion, resilience and resolve.
