The Hon. Roland Penner, C.M., Q.C. [B.A./49, LL.B./61] was a professor at the Faculty of Law from 1972 to 2009, serving as Dean from 1989 - 1994. After retiring, he remained a Senior Scholar at Robson Hall until his passing on Thursday, May 31, 2018.

Faculty of Law mourns passing of Roland Penner, former Dean, senior scholar, alumnus

June 4, 2018 — 

The Dean’s Office of Robson Hall Faculty of Law, shared sad news with faculty, staff and students in an email this weekend. “It is with great sadness that I relay to you the passing of Roland Penner, who until his death, was a Senior Scholar at Robson Hall and previous Dean (1989 – 94),” said Dr. Jonathan Black-Branch, Dean of Law. “I am sure you will join me in acknowledging the great contribution he made to the Faculty of Law and to Manitoba and Canada as a whole.” 

Among his many achievements, including serving as Attorney-General, Province of Manitoba (1981 – 1987) and being named to the Order of Canada (2000) and to the Order of Manitoba (2014), the Hon. Roland Penner, C.M., O.M., Q.C. [B.A./49, LL.B./61] was a professor at the Faculty of Law from 1972 to 2009, teaching courses in constitutional law, criminal law, labour law, evidence, and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. After serving as a Member of Legislative Assembly under Howard Pawley, he was Dean of Law from 1989 to 1994. Upon retiring, he continued to serve the Faculty as a Senior Scholar until his passing.
