Media Advisory: Celebrating 50 years of Indigenous Studies at UM

Join us on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2025, as the Department of Indigenous Studies at UM celebrates its 50th anniversary. The event will welcome back members of the first Indian, Métis and Eskimo Student Association established in 1971, alumni of the program, and long-time supporters of the department’s growth over the last five decades. As well as honouring the past, it will look to the future and the vision for the department in the decades ahead. 

Event details:

12:30 p.m. – Doors open
1:00 p.m. – Welcome remarks
1:30 p.m. – Looking back and to the future panel discussion with Ovide Mercredi, Edwin Jebb and Moses Okimaw
2:30 p.m. – Announcements
3:00 p.m. – Reception

Experts from the department will be available for interviews at the event. There may be some opportunities for advance interviews on Tuesday. Please contact UM Media Relations.
