Media Release: UM researchers part of major black hole discovery

A team of UM researchers, led by Samar Safi-Harb, Astrophysicist and Canada Research Chair in Extreme Astrophysics, is part of the international LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA collaboration that recently announced a major discovery; the collision of two black holes. This event, known as GW231123, could transform our understanding of black holes and the origin of the Universe.

UM researchers, leading an ambitious Canadian flagship project with other researchers from across Canada, Denmark and Australia have hit a bedrock milestone. They successfully reached the goal of drilling and retrieving a 613 metre deep ice core at Axel Heibergs Island, Nunavut, Canada. The deepest ice core ever pulled in Canada with thousands of years of information waiting to be discovered.

Media Release: Landmark Research Project Discovers more than 1.2-Million-Year-long Ice Core
January 9, 2025 —
From a remote site in Antarctica, an international team of scientists, including Dr. Dorthe Dahl-Jensen, from the University of Manitoba (UM), has achieved a historic milestone. The team successfully drilled a 2,800-meter-long ice core, reaching bedrock beneath the Antarctic ice sheet and uncovering the longest continuous ice core record of past climate at more than 1.2 million-years-old.
