University of Manitoba honours agricultural leaders with 2025 Certificate of Merit

The University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences proudly celebrated the 45th anniversary of its Certificate of Merit by recognizing three outstanding alumni for their exceptional contributions to Manitoba’s agricultural sector and rural communities.

Master of Laws 2025 graduate Oluwafisayo Stephen Ayita will return to Robson Hall this fall as a member of UM’s first cohort of the Internationally Trained Lawyers program.

June 18, 2025 — 
Oluwafisayo Stephen Ayita likes an academic challenge. He had only just moved to Winnipeg having obtained permanent resident status and was settling into the city with his family when he made a last-minute decision to submit his application for the Master of Laws program at the University of Manitoba on December 11, 2022, four days before the deadline. He was accepted into the program, starting in the fall of 2023, and graduated with his LLM degree at UM’s Spring Convocation on June 4, 2025.

As a child growing up in Australia in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Samara Hand wasn’t taught much about Indigenous peoples or cultures in school. Today, the visiting doctoral researcher argues that exploring the fundamental assumptions of education systems and considering alternative models can open possibilities for an education system that is grounded in, and honours, Indigenous ways of knowing.
