Advancing Equity, Diversity and Inclusion

President’s Task Force established to provide recommendations

October 29, 2019 —

A President’s Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) has been established to provide recommendations on the process and actions required to identify and examine obstacles and inequities facing faculty, staff and students at the University of Manitoba.

Chaired by Vice-Provost (Academic Affairs) Diane Hiebert-Murphy, the task force includes senior leaders, faculty members, students and staff members, as well as resource members drawn from relevant units of the University. The committee will provide an interim report by May 2020, with a final report and recommendations by September 30, 2020, to the President and Vice-Presidents.

The task force will:

  • Explore what we are currently doing at the unit-level and centrally to identify and eliminate obstacles and inequities in order to create an equitable, diverse, and inclusive community;
  • Assess what is still needed to ensure that EDI principles are embraced and fully supported within the UM community;
  • Analyze what is considered best practice in advancing EDI in post-secondary institutions; and
  • Outline the processes and actions that should be undertaken to advance EDI at the University of Manitoba.

“We recognize that many individuals and groups at UM have been engaging in important events, activities and initiatives designed to advance equity, diversity and inclusion and we recognize that gaps and barriers remain and that more work is needed,” states Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Janice Ristock.

“The task force will engage faculty, staff and students to help determine a path going forward.”

The President’s Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion supports the University’s overarching Strategic Plan, Taking Our Place, which provides a framework for placing equity, diversity, and inclusion at the forefront of how we teach, learn, create and share knowledge and engage with one another and the broader community.

“The important work of the task force will help ensure that UM is a place where equity, diversity, and inclusion are an integral part of all that we do,” said President David Barnard.
