The Campus Commute Survey results are in
The results are in! In January 2018, our University community shared their experiences commuting to campus by participating in the University of Manitoba’s second comprehensive Campus Commute survey.
The responses are encouraging. From the over 6,500 students, staff, and faculty that answered the survey, 65% of respondents indicated using a sustainable mode of transportation (bike, walk, carpool, bus, park and ride) for their commute to and from the Bannatyne and Fort Garry campuses. In particular, transit has become an extremely popular mode of travel, with 40% of Fort Garry trips and 27% of Bannatyne trips reported as made by bus.

We also asked our University community how they would prefer to commute to and from campus/work under ideal circumstances. Many people identified a preference to travel by a sustainable mode (bike, walk, carpool, bus, park and ride) for at least some trips under ideal circumstances.
Congratulations to students, staff, and faculty continue to make the choice for sustainable travel options! Through this survey, we now have an even greater understanding of how our community travels to our campuses, and we are excited to see our community show an interest in sustainable travel options. The Campus Commute shows not only a significant uptake in biking, walking, carpooling, busing, and park and ride, but also that we are thinking about sustainable travel options. When asked to identify infrastructure and program changes, Bannatyne and Fort Garry both chose the following options as their most important:
• Increased frequency and space on buses
• Improved walking infrastructure
• Flexible parking permit
• Improved cycling infrastructure

The University of Manitoba continues to act on providing our community with more and better sustainable transportation options. This includes projects like the UMCycle Bike Kiosk which is a full scale community bike shop. Through collaboration and consultation, improvements have been brought to the Fort Garry campus to develop new shelters and enhanced transit services to and from campus. Through working with the City of Winnipeg, a new East-West connection for pedestrians and cyclists along McDermot Avenue, through the heart of Bannatyne Campus. With these, and many other projects, the University of Manitoba is proud to remain committed to providing sustainable transportation options to its community. Thanks again for your valuable feedback!
