Meeting with the stars
The astronomers are coming.
The annual meeting of the Canadian Astronomical Society (CASCA) will be held in Winnipeg from May 30 to June 2, 2016, at Hotel Fort Garry. Among the sponsors for the meeting are the University of Manitoba department of physics and astronomy in the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Graduate Studies, the Physics and Astronomy Graduate Students’ Association (PAGSA), the Winnipeg Institute for Theoretical Physics (WITP), the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) and the University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association (GSA).
Several astronomy faculty and students are presenting research at the conference, including: Jennifer West, Gilles Ferrand, Adam Rogers, Martin Heusen, Sarka Wykes and Christopher O’Dea. Eight others are presenting at poster sessions.
The keynote speaker at the CASCA annual meeting this year is the winner of the 2015 Nobel Prize in Physics, Dr. Art McDonald, from Queen’s University. His free public lecture is titled: The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory: Observing the Sun from 2 km Underground. It will be presented on Wednesday evening, June, 1, 2016.
