Learn CPR and how to use an AED on Nov. 27

Help create more survivors by learning the lifesaving skill of CPR and how to use an AED at University Centre on November 27, 2015 between 10:00-3:00.

Up to 40,000 cardiac arrests occur each year in Canada. That’s one every 13 minutes. Would you know what to do? Cardiac arrest can occur without warning at any age and strike without warning.  Rapid response in an emergency is vital to survival as the majority of cardiac arrests (85%) occur outside of hospital, in public places or in homes. Would you know what to do?

Without rapid recognition and treatment, most victims of cardiac arrest will die before reaching the hospital. For every minute that defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival drops by 7-10%. Current survival rates are very low, it is estimated that only 5% of Canadians survive a cardiac arrest outside of a hospital. However, fast CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED use within the first minutes can double a person’s chance of survival.

The Heart and Stroke Foundation and WFPS are bringing CPR and AED training to the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg this fall with Operation Revive. This community based training blitz by  Heart and Stroke instructors and WFPS paramedics focuses on “Hands Only” CPR and how to use an AED. This is not a certified course but will provide you with the skills necessary in an emergency.

Stop by and learn what to do to save a life. Challenge your peers and co-workers  to join as well by spreading the word through social media and let’s ensure that everyone at the university is ready to assist in a medical emergency.
