In Between Spaces, on now

In the exhibition In Between Spaces the viewer encounters a series of three compact towers, each containing a portal into a miniature interior space. Each space is an illusion created from layers that contain segments of the reflected rooms, and that are visible to varying degrees from outside the form. The magic of the illusion lies in Erika Dueck’s careful assembly of components to create the perception of physical depth and dimension.

These works have emerged from the artist’s desire to comprehend how the human mind makes sense of the seen and unseen to understand the world. Dueck considers that the interior scenes created “act as archetypal psychological spaces that vacillate between themes of creation, destruction, and transformation”.

In 2013, the year she graduated from University of Manitoba with a BFA (Honours), Erika Dueck was the national winner of the BMO 1st Art! invitational competition, and was one of eleven winners of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights Global Art Competition. Her work has been exhibited across Canada in Winnipeg, Montreal and Toronto, as well as in Texas, New York and Rome. She is currently completing work on her Master of Fine Arts at the University of Guelph.

Erika Dueck will be present at the public reception for the exhibition, July 30, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. In Between Spaces is open to the public until July 31, Monday to Friday, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
