Partnership offers students, faculty and staff a free digital subscription

October 17, 2024 —

Did you know Media Literacy Week is Oct. 21-25 in Canada? Never has it been more important to think critically about the information you’ve consumed online.

That’s why it’s important to get news and media from a trusted source.

To help set you up for digital media literacy success, the Winnipeg Free Press offers free digital subscriptions for University of Manitoba students.

This UM benefit will help you stay connected to breaking news coverage, in-depth investigations, arts and life writing, and the latest sports reporting.

Paul Samyn, editor of the Winnipeg Free Press, reflects on the importance of getting information from a trusted source.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t had a chance to pursue a university education,” he says.

“But when I was a student on campus, I didn’t have to worry about a media landscape littered with misinformation and disinformation. Alas, today, that is a reality for you and everyone whenever they scroll and stream.”

That’s why the Free Press is at the University of Manitoba with our offer of free digital subscriptions so you will always have somewhere trustworthy to turn to for information that matters to you,” says Samyn.

On this Media Literacy Week, we encourage you to tap into this benefit that will enable you to be informed and avoid falling victim to misinformation and disinformation.”

The Free Press has also launched Journalism 101, a web page aimed at demystifying how the news comes together.
