UM ranks in top 1.4 percentile of world’s leading universities, 11th in Canada: Center for World University Rankings

The University of Manitoba has ranked in the top 1.4 percentile of universities around the world in 2024 according to the influential Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the largest academic ranking of global universities.

This year’s rankings list the top 2,000 universities of 20,966 institutions evaluated.

UM ranks 11th in Canadian universities overall and 8th amongst the U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities. UM’s top 1.4 percentile position globally is based on its ranking of 289 of the total evaluated; regionally for USA and Canada, its ranking is 102.

The largest academic ranking of global universities, CWUR assesses the quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty and research performance without relying on surveys and university data submissions.

Hiebert-Murphy adds, “It’s impressive and inspiring to see our alumni go on to academic and professional success launched from their educational experience at UM; and to see the hard work and accomplishments of UM scholars and researchers recognized on the global stage.”

UM excellence and impact

The University of Manitoba is the province’s largest and most research-intensive university, with an allocation of 50 Canada Research Chairs and housing more than 50 research centres, institutes and shared facilities.

Center for World University Rankings (CWUR)

The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) has been publishing an annual academic ranking of universities around the world since 2012 and is the largest academic ranking of global universities.

CWUR uses seven objective, robust indicators grouped into four areas to rank the world’s universities: Education: based on the academic success of a university’s alumni, measured relative to the university’s size (25%); Employability: based on the professional success of a university’s alumni (25%); Faculty: based on number of faculty members who have received top academic distinctions (10%); Research including output measured by research papers quantity (10%) appearing in high-quality publications (10%) and in highly-influential journals (10%) and number of citations (10%).
