UM named one of MB’s Top Employers for 13th consecutive year

March 19, 2024 —

The University of Manitoba has been named among Manitoba’s Top 100 Employers (2024), as well as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers (2024) by Mediacorp Canada inc., Canada’s largest employment periodicals publisher. This is the thirteenth consecutive Manitoba’s Top Employer designation and eighth consecutive Canada’s Best Diversity Employer designation for UM.

“I am thrilled that UM has been named among Manitoba’s Top Employers once again. We strive to be not only a university of choice but an employer of choice for all Manitobans, and we carry the Top Employer designation with pride and renewed enthusiasm for fostering a workplace that supports the well-being of its employees,” said Naomi Andrew, Vice-President (Administration).

Some of the reasons UM has been selected as one of Manitoba’s Top Employers (2024) include:

  • Generous paid vacation in addition to days off between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 for a winter closure
  • Generous maternity and parental leave top-up payments, including adoption top-ups
  • UM encourages employees to adopt healthy lifestyles, provides subsidized memberships to onsite fitness facilities
  • UM offers flexible working arrangements, including hybrid work, flexible hours, and a 35-hour work week
  • UM offers comprehensive benefits packages, including health care spending accounts

You can read more about UM’s reasons for selection on our Manitoba’s Top Employer web page. You can also see UM on the cover of this year’s Manitoba’s Top Employers magazine.

UM is also one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for 2024, a designation awarded to employers with “exceptional workplace diversity and inclusiveness programs.”

Some of the reasons for UM’s Canada’s Best Diversity Employers (2024) designation include:

  • Gaa wii ji’I diyaang: A committee of Indigenous and non-Indigenous faculty, staff and students supporting and advocating for Indigenous Achievement at UM
  • The creation of the Anti-Racism Task Force
  • Faculty equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility committees
  • Actions to increase EDIA in hiring for faculty and support staff roles
  • Expanding EDIA positions and hires

“To be recognized as one of Canada’s Best Diversity Employers for the eighth consecutive year demonstrates our ongoing commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility at every level for UM faculty and support staff. Our goal is to keep identifying systemic inequities and to narrow gaps as we push to do better each year,” said Tina Chen, Vice-President (Equity).

Since 2000, Mediacorp Canada Inc. has been publishing the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project, which has since branched out into 19 special-interest and regional competitions. This is the seventeenth edition of both the Manitoba’s Top Employers competition and Canada’s Best Diversity Employers competition.

Companies from across Canada may submit a single application each year for each category, and Mediacorp Canada editors choose winners based on eight criteria:

  • Workplace
  • Work atmosphere and social
  • Health, financial and family benefits
  • Vacation and time off
  • Employee communications
  • Performance management
  • Training and skills development
  • Community involvement
