Chemical clean-up: Six buildings to temporarily close on evening of Aug. 22
Work being done to ensure ongoing campus safety for all
Maintaining the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors is a priority at the University of Manitoba.
In efforts to keep our labs and campus community safe, it’s essential that UM safely disposes of expired or damaged chemicals as part of regular and ongoing practices. To facilitate this process, five buildings on Fort Garry campus and one on Bannatyne campus will be closed for the evening on August 22, in coordination with the Environmental Health and Safety Office, Security Services, Physical Plant and associated faculties and departments.
Clean Harbors, a company that provides comprehensive hazardous and non-hazardous waste management services, will be working in the Buller, Parker, Duff Roblin, Engineering-1 (EITC-E1 and Ellis buildings from 7:00 p.m. onwards on Fort Garry campus. They will also be at the Apotex Centre, Bannatyne campus, from 10:00 p.m. onwards. To ensure a smooth and orderly operation, these buildings must be exited by 6:00 p.m. – building occupants have already been notified.
All buildings are expected to be reopened for normal operations the morning of August 23. UM’s Environmental Health and Safety Office has been working with areas of the university to review all chemical storage on campuses and ensure everyone is following the best practices possible, in compliance with provincial and federal regulations.
