Queen Elizabeth Scholars prepare for global internship opportunities
The Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Education will be accepting up to 16 QES scholars selected from senior undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in degree programs at the University of Manitoba.
UM is part of the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarship (QES) program that aims to develop the next generation of innovative leaders and community builders, both locally and globally. “The QES program is a project-based scholarship program. In response to QES calls for proposals, Canadian universities submit project proposals that include inbound and outbound scholarship opportunities in various fields and disciplines.”
The University of Manitoba was recognized for its program, Engaging Indigenous Languages, Knowledges, Learning and the Land. Led by Faculty of Education professor Sandra Kouritzin, her team is made up of Drs. Clea Schmidt (Education), Satoru Nakagawa (Arts) and Filiberto Penados (Natural Resources Institute).
UM program’s goal is to “create a community of education-focused scholars who will become leaders and advocates in global Indigenous language vitality, Indigenous ontologies and epistemologies, Indigenous food sovereignty and learning from the land.”
16 selected UM students will participate in a 90-day internship in Belize offered in partnership with our Indigenous partner; CELA, Belize. Internships may be either field or research based and will focus on four areas: Languages, knowledges and land.
