UM joins Canadian Collegiate Esports League

Competition beings May 29, open to current students of participating schools

May 17, 2021 —

Later his month the ever-growing esports phenomenon will have opportunity to flourish at UM as the first Canadian Collegiate Esports League (CCEL) event will take flight on May 29.

The University of Manitoba has joined 12 other Canadian institutions to form the CCEL, aiming to nationalize esports adoption through creation of a unified body to organize, manage and lead collegiate esports.

UM Recreation Services will manage promotion and league particulars after running a couple of successful esports events earlier in the year.

“This is a great opportunity to engage UM students through an alternative type of competitive expression,” says Tanya Angus, director of Recreation Services.

“We were pleased with participation of our earlier events and now very excited to be first out of the gate in the league with a group of schools from across the country.”

Using Harena Data’s esports analytics and club management portal, GYO Score, universities can organize competitive or casual matches, manage their players and teams, connect with other schools, and keep track of leagues and records.

“It’s crucial for esports to have a central organization that brings schools together to play efficiently and competitively,” said Bill Dever, Chief Strategy Officer at Harena Data.

The CCEL’s first event, a Rocket League tournament on May 29, will create the best experience possible by mixing social events with competitive nature as schools battle against one another for reputation and prizes.
