New insight into kaleidoscope of research
Eleven University of Manitoba researchers and thirty graduate students and one post-doctoral fellow, are among the recipients of the latest $141 million funding announcement from the Government of Canada.
On Jan. 30, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, announced funding going to Canada’s most talented scholars, including early-career researchers, across the country. These awards are supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Insight Development Grants and Talent scholarship and fellowship programs.
“Social sciences and humanities research is at the heart of understanding the challenges and opportunities facing our communities and our people,” said Duncan. “Nurturing young talent in these disciplines is one of the best ways to build a healthier, stronger and more prosperous Canada.”
The U of M recipients were awarded a total of $1,457,389 million in funding.
“I congratulate these newly funded researchers and scholars who are embarking on a transformative journey of research and discovery at the University of Manitoba,” said Digvir S. Jayas, vice-president (research and international) and Distinguished Professor at the University of Manitoba.
Insight Development Grants support research in its initial stages. The grants enable the development of new research questions, as well as experimentation with new methods, theoretical approaches and/or ideas. Funding is provided for short-term research development projects, of up to two years, proposed by individuals or teams.
“Our graduate students and postdoctoral fellows are among the best in Canada,” said Todd Mondor, vice-provost (graduate education) and dean of graduate studies. “These students and fellows compete nationally for these awards and their success is testament to the caliber of their scholarship.”
The Canada Graduate Scholarships and Fellowships awarded to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows support up-and-coming scholars who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities. SSHRC is the federal agency that promotes and supports postsecondary research and training in the humanities and social sciences in Canada.
