What to know about road construction this fall
City of Winnipeg road construction on University Crescent starts soon
As a new academic year begins, keep up to date on upcoming City of Winnipeg road construction and updates on the Sifton Road construction.
City of Winnipeg – University Crescent Construction
City of Winnipeg road construction will begin soon on University Crescent from Thatcher Drive to Dysart Road. Work this fall includes the installation of a new underground storm sewer and improvements to land drainage. Lane closures are expected. See map for details.
- Periodic lane closures on University Crescent will continue from Sept. 3 until the end of November.
- Starting on or after Sept. 9, traffic on University Crescent will be reduced at times to one lane in either direction from Thatcher Drive to Dysart Road.
- Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be slightly impacted throughout construction.
- Transit service will be maintained with temporary bus stop relocations when required. Transit reroutes may be required during special events.
- Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles as required. Flaggers will be on-site at key intersections to assist traffic as needed.
- Caution should be taken at all times during construction to ensure everyone’s safety.
- Road renewal will reconvene in May 2025 lasting until September 2025. 2025 road construction will include road construction, sidewalk and multi-use pathway upgrades, new lighting, and new traffic signals at Markham Road and Sifton Road.

What to know for Sifton Road and other campus areas
- Road construction continues on Sifton Road. The current closures and detours are in effect until Sept. 2. At minimum, one lane of traffic will reopen on Sifton Road starting Sept. 9.
- Sidney Smith Street will extend into the Southwood Circle development area (former Southwood Golf Course lands) starting Sept. 3. No access to southbound University Crescent. For access to southbound University Crescent, exit via Dysart Road to Saunderson Street to Freedman Crescent.
- No access to Sifton Road from Sidney Smith Street to University Crescent from Sept. 3-8.
- Parking Lot ABC is closed until Sept. 9. Permit holders and daycare pickup and drop-off to be temporarily relocated. Communications will be sent via email to those affected.
- Barricades and safety signage will be clearly posted to safely direct pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles as required. Caution should be taken at all times during construction to ensure everyone’s safety.
- In order to reduce delays, interim pick-up and drop-off locations have been identified across the Fort Garry campus. See map for locations.
- Campus wide road repairs will wrap up Sept. 1. Temporary lane closures, barricades and flaggers can be expected across campus until the end of August.
- A traffic calming pilot project on Maclean Crescent will begin Aug. 26. The project will use temporary measures to test traffic flow changes on Maclean Crescent to reduce traffic volumes along Dafoe Road and in the campus core.
