Weaving Indigenous Heritage into Modern Design
UM alum, Destiny Seymour, was recently featured in the Globe and Mail
Indigo Arrows, founded by Destiny Seymour [BA(Adv)/00, MID/13], an Anishinaabe interior designer from Winnipeg, is much more than a design brand—it’s a cultural journey. Seymour’s vision for Indigo Arrows began in 2016, driven by a desire to revive and celebrate the patterns of her ancestors. Through her designs, Seymour seeks to honour Indigenous artistry while crafting home decor pieces that blend functionality with tradition.
Her minimalist yet striking designs have found a unique niche, offering a modern touch that remains deeply rooted in cultural realities. Each piece, whether it’s hand-printed linen or ceramic, carries the essence of Anishinaabe heritage, translating ancient geometric motifs into beautiful, everyday objects for contemporary spaces. This thoughtful integration of history and artistry is what makes Indigo Arrows more than just a brand—it’s a movement that reconnects people with Indigenous stories and intentional craftsmanship.
Much like UM’s “Bisons at the Centre” philosophy, which places community, resilience, and tradition at the heart of everything, Indigo Arrows embodies these values in every creation. Destiny Seymour has not only crafted a brand but also a platform for Indigenous voices, shaping a path forward where art, culture, and commerce intersect meaningfully. Both Seymour and her designs inspire a deeper connection to community, history, and identity, aligning with the UM’s commitment to centering people and values in the pursuit of innovation.
By merging heritage with modern design, Indigo Arrows stands as a testament to the enduring strength of Indigenous culture and creativity, much like the bison, a symbol of resilience and unity.
