We are all Bisons: UM explores brand refresh for its sport and recreation units

Your feedback is valuable, watch for survey in your inbox

October 24, 2024 —

The University of Manitoba is on an exciting journey to reimagine its sport and recreation brands. Stakeholder and community feedback is central to understanding what it means to be a Bison from various perspectives while aiming to align more closely with UM’s current brand.

Sport and recreation, backed by the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management (FKRM), actively engage with UM students, staff, faculty and alumni through various offerings. Additionally, they welcome thousands of visitors to the UM campuses through community-focused programming every year.

Since launching the project, voices of our community—students, staff, faculty, alumni, and partners—have shared their thoughts and vision for what this family of brands means to them.

“The impact of our programs is significant and I’m sure there are many stakeholders who are eager to contribute to this exercise,” says Douglas Brown, Dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Recreation Management. “We are excited that our community will have a voice in helping us create a new era for sport and recreation at the university and in our province.”

Over the past few months, stakeholders have participated in a series of focus group sessions that sparked many inspiring conversations. The dialogue brought together a wide range of voices, from Bisons student-athletes, Mini U Programs and Junior Bisons families to Recreation Services members,  alumni, donors, and Indigenous partners. Each story and insight is essential to help shape the next steps of this project.

Through online efforts, there’s been a tremendous response both through the general form to help gauge the community’s awareness of the sport and recreation brands and a more targeted survey to gather more specific data.

The survey, administered by Academica Group will remain open until November 4—if you didn’t receive a link but want to share your thoughts, please email lindsey.wiebe@umanitoba.ca for a personalized link.

“We are looking forward to honouring the legacy of the bison while giving it a fresh and creative update,” says Doug Brown. This will help bring the sport and recreation brands closer to the core identity of the university and strengthen the unity of our community.”
