The new book “The moral case for fossil fuels” by Alex Epstein should be required reading for everyone, especially politicians and policy makers.

We must pledge to end our reliance on fossil fuels by no later than 2030 and end our emissions of greenhouse gases soon after that to avoid runaway global warming, which will result from positive feedbacks (melting ice, deforestation, and increased evaporation raising water vapour levels, for example). To do that, we must leave a minimum of 80% of all known fossil fuels in the ground. Otherwise, we can not avoid climate catastrophe. This is the science of climate change.

There is a limit to what the atmosphere can hold without substantial sequestration of greenhouse gases, mostly in the oceans. The oceans are acidifying from increased carbon absorption and warming from increasing atmospheric temperatures and absorption of solar radiation, which in turn reduces the ability of the oceans to absorb carbon dioxide. We can only emit so much before the oceans will no longer be a carbon sink.
