January 6, 2021 —

The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) has announced the winning recipients of its 2021 senior engineering awards and fellowship inductees. Two Price Faculty of Engineering professors, Dr. James Blatz, P.Eng. and Dr. Ekram Hossain, P.Eng., have both been inducted as EIC Fellows for their exceptional contributions to engineering in Canada.

Dr. James Blatz [BSc(CE)/96, PhD/00] is a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, conducting research in the areas of risk management for civil engineering infrastructure and technical aspects of temporary and permanent flood protection works. He was previously the Associate Head of the Department of Civil Engineering and also served as Associate Dean (Research and Graduate Programs) in the Price Faculty of Engineering.

“I am thrilled and humbled to receive this honour from the Engineering Institute of Canada,” said Blatz. “I greatly appreciate the recognition from my colleagues and I thank my nominators and the Canadian Geotechnical Society for submitting my name for this recognition”

Since March 2010, Dr. Ekram Hossain has been a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Currently, he serves as an Associate Chair (Graduate Studies) of the Department. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Victoria in 2001. In addition to his research in wireless communication networks, Hossain leads the Wireless Communications, Networks, and Services (WiCoNS) research group at the University of Manitoba.

“I am honoured to receive this recognition through our professional society, namely, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE), Canada,” said Hossain. “For this recognition, I gratefully acknowledge the support from my graduate students and research associates at UM, and other research collaborators, research sponsors, as well as my professional colleagues. Working with my students, collaborators, and engaging with my professional community have always been very rewarding for me.”

The 2021 awards will be presented along with 2020 awards at the next EIC Gala & Banquet which, due to ongoing pandemic circumstances, will be held in the Spring of 2022.
