Faculty of Science Award of Excellence for Support Staff recognizes support staff who have served their units with distinction by helping deliver on the commitment of the Faculty of Science to provide outstanding higher education and research.

Dr. Sabine Kuss, associate professor and associate head (graduate) at the Department of Chemistry, recently received the Combination Merit Award 2023.

August 16, 2024 — 
Adam Clay, professor and associate head graduate at the mathematics department, tells us whatever degree you choose at the university will focus your training and skill sets in a way that opens doors and closes some for your future. "A degree in mathematics", he says, "closes the fewest doors and opens the most."

This year, in July 2024, Shad Manitoba inspired young minds, showed them the potential of pursuing an education at UM and presented them with opportunities all around Manitoba.

July 25, 2024 — 
The Laboratory for Bioanalytics and Electrochemical Sensing at the University of Manitoba has developed a novel approach to detect an incurable disease in young infants in a non-invasive, inexpensive and efficient manner.

July 18, 2024 — 
It all started when John Sorensen, a chemistry professor, and his research team discovered an enzyme with an interesting reaction, a difficult step in the organic synthesis laboratory. The reaction normally requires multiple steps and many reagents without the same yields. But with the enzyme, it could be done in a single step in great condition. The discovery then sparked conversations about commercialization among the research team and how it could be put somewhere on a store shelf.

June is National Indigenous History Month, and while at the Faculty of Science, we celebrate the accomplishments and contributions of the Indigenous community on campus throughout the year, we wanted to take this time to listen to the journey, the proud moments, the challenges and the resilience of the Indigenous faculty, students and staff.

June 28, 2024 — 
The Solar Hydrogen Activity Research Kit (SHArK North!) Solar Energy Outreach Program is an educationally inclusive outreach program run in partnership with multiple Winnipeg-area high schools. The program introduces Grade 11 and 12 students to materials science and renewable energy research, via the challenge of sustainably powering our planet. Specifically, the program provides participants with experience in hands-on research in combinatorial solid-state mixed metal oxide construction and electrochemical evaluation of light-driven water oxidation.

June 11, 2024 — 
STRR holds a special meaning since the nomination is made by an outstanding graduate student. They chose two educators who have significantly influenced their learning journey—one from Kindergarten to Grade 12 years and another from their time at the University of Manitoba.

May 24, 2024 — 
The Asian communities at the Faculty of Science include brilliant people from students in labs to instructors passionately teaching in classes, professors conducting ground-breaking research, and support staff who make our departments and the Faculty an extraordinary environment. With May being the Asian Heritage Month, we decided to shine the light on the contributions of the Asian communities at the Faculty and celebrate their presence.
