Medscape Medical News: Social factors are associated with higher risk of serious injury in kids, UM study finds

For children, living in a rural area, being born to a teen mother, and being part of a family that receives income assistance are three factors associated with an increased risk of traumatic injury requiring hospitalization, a new UM study has found.

Heart disease is the second leading cause of death in Canada. In particular, people who work shifts may face a greater risk than most, according to Dr. Lorrie Kirshenbaum, a professor at University of Manitoba (UM) and Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences at the St. Boniface Hospital Albrechtsen Research Centre.

UM’s AirSAFE lab the first in Canada to study air pollution and health across disciplines

The UM AirSAFE lab is Canada’s first and only multi-disciplinary research centre dedicated to studying the impact of air quality on human health. Two years after the initiative received transformative gifts and grants, AirSAFE co-leads Dr. Andrew Halayko and Dr. Neeloffer Mookherjee are establishing AirSAFE as a national hub research on air quality and human health.
