Be there for every student, deputy education minister tells teacher candidates

The first school that Gerald Farthing attended was a one-room schoolhouse with only nine other children. But when the deputy education minister sent his own children to school, theirs had 800 students, he told Faculty of Education teacher candidates during his keynote speech at EdCon, held during Reading Week.

Campus Life, CanU programs join forces

February 18, 2015 — 
Tanya Thompson has always had a soft spot for children. As well as being an auntie, she’s been a volunteer at the University of Manitoba daycare, the Playcare Centre, for several years. And now, the Campus Life student has taken on another volunteer position at CanU, the university based after-school program for under-resourced middle school youth. CanU aims to get these students involved and interested in attending university after high school. The Campus Life program provides students with intellectual and developmental disabilities with support and guidance in auditing university classes.

B.Ed. student’s video art group performs with symphony at Winnipeg New Music Festival

Teacher candidate Brian Longfield is a visual artist who aims to bring his talents in the art world to students the classroom. The busy year one Bachelor of Education student program was selected to do an interactive video art piece with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra during Winnipeg’s recent New Music Festival.

Literature professor publishes Great Gray Owl book for children

Karen Smith remembers when she first became fascinated with owls. She was in the third grade and had gotten in trouble at school in her hometown of Carman, Man., for acting up. “My mom said, ‘Be a wise owl,’” says Smith, a language and literacy professor in the Faculty of Education.

When David Mandzuk, dean of the Faculty of Education, and his co-author Shelley Hasinoff, an independent education consultant, decided to collaborate on a book about the continued relevance of the foundations of education—despite the concern by many educators that the foundations are eroding—they didn’t have to look too far to find real-life examples.
