The Office of Sustainability wants to hear from you!

The Literacy and Culture of Sustainability survey is now available to assess the knowledge that student, staff and faculty have of both general sustainability awareness and University of Manitoba-specific initiatives and information. This survey aims to provide baseline data on the UM community and act as a guide for future sustainable education efforts on our campuses.

Why are we collecting this information?

As a part of the UM Board of Governors-approved Sustainability Strategy 2019-2023, the Office of Sustainability is working to complete the 2022 Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) report. Part of this report is conducting a Literacy and Culture of Sustainability survey.

STARS, a program of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. STARS enables meaningful comparisons over time and across institutions as it uses a determined set of measurements to rank all institutions that submit. This rating system aims to create incentives for continual improvements toward sustainability while also building a stronger, more diverse campus sustainability community.

This STARS Report is comprised of 63 separate subsections that collectively provide a holistic report on all sustainability aspects of a college or university. Throughout these sections, there is a total of 200 points that can be earned by an institution based on their submitted reports. UM submits a STARS report every three to four years.

In 2015, UM earned a Silver Rating, followed by a Gold Rating in 2018. This year the UM is aiming to earn the highest rating of Platinum. Every report, the UM strives to do better in each subsection to not only earn more points and improve its overall rating, but also create new engagement opportunities for the UM community.
