Sun: U of M student a world-class fencer

Chantel Helwer, a University of Manitoba law student, has been named to Team Canada for the 2014 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Scotland and the Winnipeg Sun wrote a brief feature on her.

Chantel Helwer was 18 years old when she picked up a sword and didn’t know what to do next.

“I didn’t know anything about fencing other than what I had seen in the movies,” Helwer recalled Tuesday. “I was thinking about Zorro and Pirates of the Caribbean.”

Little did she know she would become an elite-level fencer with Olympic dreams, but the University of Manitoba third-year law student was just named to Team Canada for the 2014 Commonwealth Fencing Championships in Scotland.
