Sun: Finnish Olympian Venla Hovi feeling right at home with Bisons

November 24, 2016 —

As the Winnipeg Sun reports:

When Winnipeggers think of Finnish hockey players, there are a few attributes that immediately come to mind.

Speed, scoring touch, the ability to change a game in an instant.

There’s a player in the city right now with all those qualities, and we’re not talking about Patrik Laine.

“She’s extraordinarily fast, the fastest player in our league by far,” Manitoba Bisons coach Jon Rempel says of forward Venla Hovi.

“She has the ability to just control the play. She can change speeds so well. She’s just smart. That’s what 12 years of playing international hockey against the best players in the world will do for you.”

Hovi is a 29-year-old, two-time Olympian from Finland, who is in her second year with the Bisons. She has helped the team to an 8-3-1 record so far, recording three goals and five assists in eight games.

Before arriving in Winnipeg, Hovi played one year of NCAA hockey at Niagara University (2007-08) and 10 years with the Finnish national team.
