Students sleep outside for local charity

March 10, 2014 —

For the sixth consecutive year, five University of Manitoba students will sleep outside for five nights to raise awareness and donations for Resource Assistance for Youth, Inc. (RaY), a local charity.

The four Asper School of Business students, and one Faculty of Arts student, will join 26 Canadian universities in the national 5 Days for the Homeless campaign, which began March 9.

Students Sara Bulloch, Riley George, Sam Davidson, Martin Michalak, and Matt Odger will forgo the comfort of their homes to live outside on the University of Manitoba campus for five nights, while still fulfilling their duties as students. They will not be able to shower or purchase any meals and must fulfill all their regular student duties as the campaign attempts to raise this year’s goal of $20,000.

“After visiting RaY, I’m very excited to share what I’ve learned. I never knew Winnipeg had the largest youth homeless population in Canada. It’s a very worthy cause and I’m ecstatic to sleep outside to help raise awareness about the issue,” says student Sara Bulloch.

There are several fundraising events taking place to help reach the University of Manitoba’s campaign goal of $20,000. Campaign events include:

  • ‘5 Acts for the Homeless’ at the Hub on Thursday, March 13th (tickets available in the Drake Center for $10)
  • Silent Auction (Drake Center all week)
  • Pancake Breakfast Sale (Thursday in the Drake Center)

The 5 Days for the Homeless campaign in Winnipeg is fuelled by its supporters: CG Power Solutions, MX Restorations, Birchwood Automotive Group, Standard Aero, Instant Imprints St. Vital, Kawaii Crepe, Downtown Winnipeg Biz, the University of Manitoba, and the Asper School of Business.
