School of Art celebrating 100 years

On Saturday, April 26, the School of Art will host a 100th Anniversary symposium featuring talks by Robert Houle, Michelle Lavalee, and a round table discussion on Indigenizing the Campus Through Art: Past and Future Perspectives.  This event is free and all are welcome to attend.

What: Indigenizing the Campus through Art: Past and Future Perspectives
When: April 26, 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Where: Room 136, ARTlab, 180 Dafoe Road

The symposium will help people recognize the need for Indigenous voices to resonate throughout our campus through art.  Speakers will address the broader social, political and educational issues related to Indigenous art by honouring the past but looking forward to the future.

Robert Houle will deliver the keynote address at 4 p.m.

A survivor of the Indian Residential School System, Houle is a member of Sandy Bay First Nation in Manitoba and currently lives and works in Toronto. He received a degree in Art History from the University of Manitoba, and studied painting and drawing at the International Summer Academy of Fine Arts in Salzburg, Austria. He taught native studies at the Ontario College of Art and Design University in Toronto for fifteen years. He has exhibited widely and written extensively on major contemporary First Nations and Native American artists.  Houle is a recipient of an Honorary Doctorate to be awarded at the University of Manitoba Convocation Ceremonies, June 4, 2014.
