Ruth scholarship receives outpouring of support from engineering community
Our alumni and engineering community came together to raise an incredible $27,157 dollars for fund over the course of the campaign.
In 2021, the Price Faculty of Engineering mourned the loss of a beloved member of the engineering community. Dean Emeritus, Dr. Douglas Ruth was a man of great generosity with a passion for engineering, engineering education, and engineering students. Doug and his wife Beverly established the “Douglas and Beverly Ruth Centenary Award in Engineering” to support undergraduate students at the Price Faculty of Engineering. In October, Friends of Engineering announced their campaign to help raise funds to support the scholarship and they would be matching donations made by our community in memory of Doug and his contributions to Friends and the faculty.
Our alumni and engineering community came together to raise an incredible $27,157 dollars for fund over the course of the campaign. As part of their pledge to match gifts made by community members Friends was pleased to present members of the Ruth family with a cheque for $10,000 for the fund. The final results exceeded all of our expectations and, in combination with provincial support that will be received over the next three years, the campaign will result in over $50,000 getting added to the scholarship to offer direct support to students in the faculty.
“The scholarship is important to enabling anyone who wanted to become an engineer to could become one,” said Chelsea, addressing the industry leaders at the Friends of Engineering 2022 Annual General Meeting. After sharing heartfelt memories of her father, Chelsea reminisced on the spirit of her father’s work in engineering education, ending her speech with her hopes for the scholarship. “I am again reminded that in industry and academia, we are connected wherever we go. I hope this scholarship will enable the progress of civilization and create the engineers of tomorrow.”
At the heart of the fund lives the students. The purpose of the fund is to encourage engineering students to excel in their studies by providing scholarship support. Friends of Engineering and the Price Faculty of Engineering thanks all those who contributed to the campaign.
