Remembering Jim Philp, award-winning teacher

May 20, 2020 —

The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences mourns the passing of retired staff member and much-loved instructor Jim Philp who died on May 12, 2020. His obituary can be found here.

Jim spent his career working for the Department of Biosystems Engineering at the University of Manitoba, starting in 1969 when it was still called the Department of Agricultural Engineering.

He was the machinery and shop methods instructor for hundreds of students over his time in the Faculty, winning student-nominated teaching awards six times from both degree and diploma classes. He also received the University of Manitoba Merit Award (Teaching) in 2004 and the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture Teaching Award of Merit in 2005.

Jim was also committed to the staff community, and organized an annual Christmas party and the Faculty baseball tournament for many years. Even after his retirement in 2009, Jim was a regular attendee at Faculty gatherings.

In lieu of flowers, his family has indicated that donations to Agriculture in the Classroom – Manitoba would be appreciated. Please indicate “In memory of Jim Philp.”
