Remembering Dean Emeritus, Dr. Garland Laliberte
The Price Faculty of Engineering regrets to announce the passing of Dean Emeritus Dr. Garland Laliberte on July 30, 2022.
Dr. Laliberte began his time at UM in 1967 when he moved back to Manitoba with his young family to begin his academic career in the Department of Agricultural Engineering. He was appointed head of the department in 1969, a position which he would hold for 17 years until taking the role of Dean in 1989. Dr. Laliberte would remain in the role of Dean until his retirement in 1996.
As his obituary reads, “The University of Manitoba was good to Garland allowing him to become involved in service to the profession of engineering, at the provincial and national level. He chaired the Canadian Engineering Accreditation, contributing to a re-definition of engineering curricula in Canada. Later he was appointed to the Canadian Council of Professional Engineers (now Engineers Canada), the entity that guides professional engineering practice in Canada. Garland was recognized many times by the professional and technical societies to which he contributed. Three of them granted him the title of Fellow. Another three presented him with awards for meritorious service and in recognition of his leadership qualities. The Association of Professional Engineers of Manitoba awarded him the title of Honorary Life Member. Garland always said, however, that the recognition he valued most was the title of Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Engineering given on his retirement because it was initiated by his colleagues.”
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dr. Garland Laliberte. His legacy and dedication to our community will be forever remembered, the impacts of which continue to influence us today. A funeral service will be held at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue on Saturday, August 6 at 2:00 pm. The family welcomes you to join us in sharing memories and to honour Garland’s life. On Aug. 6, the flag at the Administration Building will be lowered in his honour.
The family of Dr. Garland Laliberte asks that in lieu of flowers, those who wish to express support for the family are invited to contribute to the Dr. Laliberte and Dr. Bulley Scholarship.
